Nature Protection Technician

Nature Protection Technician is a four-year upper-secondary technical educational program that concludes with a final vocational matura exam. The program is structured to encompass a comprehensive understanding of nature conservation.

Students in the Nature Protection Technician program at BIC Ljubljana gain practical experience in real learning environments, including the new, wooden, and nearly zero energy school building, Eco House BIC Ljubljana. Among other amenities, the building features a technical classroom equipped with woodworking machinery, as well as a facility for conducting physical, chemical, and microbiological analyses of soil, water and air.

The program can be divided into four parts. The first part focuses on ecosystems and nature conservation. In the second part, students determine the actual state of soil, water, and air through microbiological, physical and chemical analyses. The third segment is dedicated to renewable energy sources, organic waste management, and wastewater treatment. The fourth part is devoted to nature guiding.

The program is enriched by camps. With the exception of the first year, when students participate in an introductory camp, the camps in the subsequent years are specialized, where students reinforce their theoretical knowledge through several days of outdoor activities. Fourth-year students attend a mathematics camp to reinforce their preparation for the final vocational matura exam.

They are involved in the Erasmus+ programme, through which they go on practical training to Finland, Portugal, Croatia, and Serbia.

Students also take care of the school eco-garden, where they learn about permaculture gardening and pruning fruit trees. Within the framework of the biology club, they care for the animals residing in the biology classroom.

They participate in various competitions. In Moje podjetje (My Company) competition, they establish a student company, while at the Mladi raziskovalci Slovenije (Young Researchers of Slovenia) meeting, they engage with research tasks. They also take part in English language competitions, at both national and international levels (such as Poliglot and Best in English), the English EPI Reading Badge Competition, biology and chemistry competitions organized by the Association for Technical Culture of Slovenia, the secondary school physics knowledge competition Čmrlj, the International Mathematical Kangaroo Competition and sports competitions.

We offer students student excursions where professional content intertwines with cultural, gastronomic, and touristic experiences. They travel to Vienna, Budapest, Berchtesgaden, Salzburg, and Graz.

Within the framework of Slovenska mreža zdravih šol (as part of the wider European Schools for Health in Europe) we conduct various workshops on topics such as safe Internet use, social inclusion, learning to learn, human trafficking, health and sexual education, waste separation, and the dangers of energy drinks.

Our students gain experience through participation in various projects. In the project Promocija poklicev na osnovnih šolah (promotion of professions in primary schools), they participate in creative workshops showcasing different professions. They serve as ambassadors for the European Parliament, where they explore the structure, functioning, and significance of the European Union. Additionally, they participate in the eTwinning project.

School of Food Processing and Nature Protection at BIC Ljubljana is the recipient of the European Quality Label for the eTwinning Slovenia project I Feel Very European Today. Students are involved in the Growing up with a Book project, aimed at promoting reading, as well as the initiative Amphibian Conservation on Večna pot in Ljubljana.

As part of the volunteering initiative at BIC Ljubljana, students have the opportunity to become volunteers. They participate in school celebrations and various events such as World Food Day, Shrovetide, Earth Day, used paper and used plastic bottle caps collection initiatives and the New Year's bazaar. Every year, they also host a representative from the US Embassy in Slovenia, participate in the Fascination of Plants Day and Ekopraznik in Pogačar Square in Ljubljana.
